How was shaolin founded?

The Shaolin Temple was founded in the 19th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 AD. C.). The following year, the monarch provided funds to the Indian-born monk Batuo to establish the Shaolin Temple. Like the usual Chinese martial arts system, Shaolin methods of combat are taught through forms (; tàolù).

Forms that are closely technically related are coupled to each other and are considered to be of the same substyle. They are usually called small and large forms, such as the small and large hong quan, which together form the Shaolin hong quan style, and the small and large pao quan, etc. There are also some styles with a shape, such as taizu chang quan. Some legends say that an Indian Buddhist priest named Bodhidharma (Tamo in Chinese), was the founder of Kung Fu. The emperor had initiated a major project for local Buddhist monks to translate Buddhist texts from Sanskrit into Chinese. The Shaolin temple was founded in 495 by the Indian monk Batuo, or Buddhabhadra. After traveling to China, he received permission from Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty to build a temple at the foot of Shaoshi Mountain in the Song Range, Henan Province. The word Lin means forest in Chinese, so the temple was named Shaolin after the forest at the foot of Shaoshi Mountain. In 1928, warlord Shi Yousan set fire to the monastery and burned it for more than 40 days, destroying 90 percent of the buildings, including many manuscripts in the temple library. The Cultural Revolution launched in 1966 targeted religious orders, including the monastery. The monks were publicly flogged and paraded through the streets while people threw garbage at them and then imprisoned them. The government purged Buddhist materials from the walls of the monastery, leaving it barren for years. Martial arts groups around the world have made donations for the maintenance of the temple and grounds, and are consequently honored with carved stones near the entrance to the temple. The fortune of the Shaolin Temple increased with the rise of the Tang dynasty in 618, formed by a rebel official of the Sui court.

Shaolin monks fought for Li Shimin against warlord Wang Shichong. Li would become the second Tang emperor. Thirty years after Shaolin was founded, another Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma from India came to China to teach yogic concentration, commonly known today by the Japanese term Zen Buddhism. The few remaining Shaolin monks were flogged through the streets and then imprisoned, and Shaolin's texts, paintings and other treasures were stolen or destroyed. They discussed, shared and refined their styles, making Shaolin Temple an even more important center for martial arts in China. Shaolin was allowed to reopen about a hundred years later, but the rulers were still wary of Shaolin Kung-Fu and the power it gave to its followers.
